Course Description and Objectives

Sports journalism has changed significantly over the last 15 years, and you’ll learn the most up-to-date skills required to succeed in the field. In this course, you’ll learn:

  • Fundamentals of good sports writing and reporting. 
  • How to cover events.
  • How and where to mine for great story ideas.
  • Interviewing like a pro.
  • The important differences between being a sports fan and a sports writer/reporter.
  • How to hone your research skills.
  • Podcasting, social media and broadcast journalism.
  • The differences (and the required skills) for each sub-genre of sports writing
  • How to make money as a sports writer.

As part of this course, you will have your work published at Gameday London (www.gamedaylondon.com), which will help build your portfolio.

About the instructor:

Todd Devlin is the founder and managing editor of Gameday London. Over a 20-year career, he has written extensively about sports, from the grassroots levels to the professional ranks and Olympic Games.

He’s had his work published at Sportsnet, MLB.com, Yahoo.com, and the Canadian Baseball Network. He spent time in the communications departments with the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Rock and was a reporter at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. You can visit his website at www.todddevlin.com
